Good Evening All,
Thanks to Mrs. Herrell for giving me this book last night at our "vision" meeting. The book was obviously intriguing to me for several reasons.
- I have teenage children home (who I thought would benefit from the book)
- I have teenage children at church (who I thought would benefit from the book)
- I have teenage children at my job (who I thought would benefit from the book)
I am not a prolific reader nor a speed reader, but the short two hundred and thirty pages was easy to read, so I read it today. I now know that there are more reasons that this book is intriguing to me.
- It inspired me to do more
- It made me realize that asking my own kids (and yours too) to do their "best" may be doing them a disservice
- Our kids have God given strengths and potential that we should not try to hold back in any way but should encourage them to not only "try" hard things but "do" hard things as the title says
If you have a teenager, read this book and then pass it on to them and have them read it. Please do not let anymore time pass by that your children don't do hard things.
This must begin now with our kids as they:
- Do Things That Are Outside Their Comfort Zone
- Do Things That Go Beyond What is Expected or Required
- Do Things That Are Too Big For Them To Accomplish Alone
- Do Things That Do Not Earn An Immediate Payoff
- Do Things That Challenge The Cultural Norm
More to follow about this book as I hand it off to the kids in my house first.
Love, Bro Allen
Would this be a good book to give my youth pastor?
ReplyDeleteYes Pastor, it would be great for him to read and then begin to pass it along, not only to his leadership but also youth that are leaders of other youth.
ReplyDeleteThe book does a great job at clearly showing the myth of "adolescence" today and how that myth has grown up a generation of "kidults", adults that have the mentality of kids.
I think our teens that can embrace the reality of not just sitting back and letting every thing be handed to them are the only way we will see our churches succeed in future generations.
We must show them that is is good for them to "Do Hard Things".
Thanks for the recommendation. Will check it out soon.
